Building a Bookshelf From Pallets

Pallet builds are fun for a few reasons. The first is obvious, they’re free wood! The other though is the best part, and that’s taking something worn out and broken down and transforming it into something beautiful and functional.

Disclaimer: This isn’t intended to be a tutorial, just a demonstration of what we did to build our bookshelf! If you can learn something from it, cool! but, we’re just showing it off. Enjoy!

Once the pallets were broken down and the boards were sanded and planed we were ready to begin.

For this design, we began by attaching the shelf supports to the front trim pieces. These were cut down from the pallet stringers using a table saw. We went with fixed position shelves; I would recommend setting the shelf spacing to house the books you’re building it for.

We then attached the siding boards and the shelves (both made from pallet deckboards). We notched the front shelf boards to fit around the trim.

The backing we picked up for a couple of dollars at our local discount depot and the top boards are more pallet deckboards, the same as the shelves and sides.

Here we are deciding what overlap we want the top to have.

Michelle wanted to add some decorative ivy trim pieces to the front, unfortunately we couldn’t find any pallets with those, so we just had to buy those.

We went with an espresso stain and polyurethane finish, umm, because we wanted to. It’s our bookshelf, what’s it to ya?

Testing how much of a mistake we’ve made.

I guess it looks pretty good.
